Plastic-Free Water Pipes
Copper, stainless steel, and ductile-iron supply lines — no PVC, no CPVC, no PEX, no plastic-leached drinking water.

Plastic-Free Water Pipes — a natural material we specify on every Earth Bound Homes project

Material Description
Most modern homes use plastic plumbing — PVC, CPVC, or PEX. Each carries some concern: PVC and CPVC release residual vinyl chloride monomer and organotin stabilizers (especially when new); PEX leaches phthalates, antioxidants (BHT, IRGANOX), and methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) into hot water exposure especially in the first months of service. Plastic-free alternatives are copper for supply, ductile iron or PVC-free cast iron for waste/drain/vent (DWV), and increasingly stainless steel for high-temp/high-pressure runs. EBH defaults to copper for cold-supply, type-L (heaviest-wall) for hot-supply, and cast iron for DWV — yes it's more expensive than plastic, but the drinking-water exposure and end-of-life recyclability case is compelling.
Composition & Origin

Copper (Cu, ~99.9%), stainless steel (Fe-Cr-Ni alloy), or cast iron (Fe-C alloy) · lead-free solder per US federal law since 2014
Health Profile — All Endpoints Clear
Severity scored 0–10 against the same 10 hazard endpoints we use for the chemical families on the avoid list. Every score is 1–2 — essentially no signal across every endpoint.
Common Forms & Brands
- Mueller Industries copper tube
- NIBCO copper fittings
- Charlotte Pipe cast-iron DWV
- Common framing: type-L copper supply, type-M copper supply, cast-iron DWV, stainless steel hot/recirc
Why We Use It
- No plastic monomer leaching into drinking water
- Naturally antimicrobial (copper) — bacteriostatic surface
- 100+ year service life with proper installation
- Recyclable end-of-life at scrap value (not landfill liability)
- Lead-free solder mandatory under US federal Drinking Water Standard since 2014
Where It Performs Best
- Domestic water supply (hot and cold)
- Hydronic radiant floor distribution
- Drain, waste, and vent (DWV) systems
- Recirculation loops in solar thermal and heat-pump systems
