Bamboo
Fast-growing grass — mature in 4-7 years vs 40+ for hardwood. Watch for the adhesive on engineered products.

Bamboo — a natural material we specify on every Earth Bound Homes project
Toxicity Screening — All Clear
This material screens clear across all seven independent toxicology authorities we use on every project.
Material Type
Renewable Grass Stem (Solid or Engineered)
Material Description
Bamboo is technically a grass, not a tree, and it matures in 4-7 years versus 40-80 for slow-growth hardwoods. The fiber is dense, hard, and dimensionally stable when properly seasoned, which makes it a compelling renewable alternative for flooring, paneling, and casework. The catch is that most bamboo products are engineered — strips are laminated together with an adhesive, and the adhesive choice matters enormously. EBH specifies bamboo products that use a soy-based, lignin-based, or NAF (no-added-formaldehyde) MDI adhesive — never urea-formaldehyde-bonded bamboo. With clean adhesives, bamboo screens through all our databases without flags.
Composition & Origin

Cellulose + lignin matrix (~60% cellulose) · vertical fiber orientation gives bamboo its high stiffness
Health Profile — All Endpoints Clear
Severity scored 0–10 against the same 10 hazard endpoints we use for the chemical families on the avoid list. Every score is 1–2 — essentially no signal across every endpoint.
Common Forms & Brands
- Cali Bamboo (NAF-bonded lines)
- Plyboo (Smith & Fong soy-based)
- Teragren (NAF-certified)
- Common framing: strand-woven bamboo flooring, vertical & horizontal grain bamboo, bamboo panel
Why We Use It
- Fastest mainstream renewable construction material
- Dense and dimensionally stable when properly seasoned
- Carbon-storing — bamboo plantations sequester CO₂ rapidly
- Comparable hardness to oak (strand-woven varieties)
- Adhesive selection is critical — specify NAF or soy-based binders only
Where It Performs Best
- Bamboo plank flooring
- Bamboo paneling and cabinetry
- Decorative cladding and trim
- Furniture and casework
