Material Type

Renewable Grass Stem (Solid or Engineered)

Material Description

Bamboo is technically a grass, not a tree, and it matures in 4-7 years versus 40-80 for slow-growth hardwoods. The fiber is dense, hard, and dimensionally stable when properly seasoned, which makes it a compelling renewable alternative for flooring, paneling, and casework. The catch is that most bamboo products are engineered — strips are laminated together with an adhesive, and the adhesive choice matters enormously. EBH specifies bamboo products that use a soy-based, lignin-based, or NAF (no-added-formaldehyde) MDI adhesive — never urea-formaldehyde-bonded bamboo. With clean adhesives, bamboo screens through all our databases without flags.
